Privacy Policy

Last updated · 29 May 2026

The short version: You Pick is built to need as little about you as possible. There are no public profiles, your individual swipe choices are never shared with the person you’re matching with, and we don’t sell your data. The detail below explains exactly what we collect and why.

This Privacy Policy describes how You Pick (“You Pick”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, and protects information when you use the You Pick mobile app and this website (together, the “Service”). By using the Service you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information we collect

Account information

You Pick uses anonymous authentication. When you first open the app, a unique anonymous identifier is created for your device so the app can keep track of your matches. You are not required to provide a name, email address, or password to start a match. You may optionally set a display name so a dining partner can recognise you in a match.

Match activity

When you create or join a match, we store the information needed to make it work: the match’s area, the lineup of places, the invite code, and which restaurants were mutually liked. Your individual Like and Pass decisions are kept private and are never revealed to the other participant. Only mutual matches (places you both liked) are shared between the two of you.

Location

To show restaurants near you, the app uses the area you choose or, with your permission, your device’s location. Location is used to find nearby places at the time you’re curating a match. You can decline location access and choose an area manually instead.

Diagnostics and usage

We use Firebase (a Google service) for authentication, database storage, and basic analytics. This may include app-performance and usage data such as crash reports, device type, and general interaction events, used to keep the app stable and improve it.

Restaurant data

Restaurant listings, photos, ratings, and details are provided through Google Places. Your use of place data is also subject to Google’s terms and privacy policy.

Website notify list

If you submit your email address on this website to be notified at launch, we use it solely to send you launch-related updates. You can ask to be removed at any time.

2. How we use information

  • To create and run matches between you and your dining partner.
  • To surface relevant restaurants near the chosen area.
  • To keep the Service secure, stable, and working as intended.
  • To understand, in aggregate, how the Service is used so we can improve it.
  • To send launch or product updates if you opted in via the website.

3. What we don’t do

  • We don’t sell your personal information.
  • We don’t show your individual swipe choices to anyone, including the person you’re matching with.
  • We don’t build a public, browsable profile of you.
  • We don’t require a name, email, or password to use the core app.

4. Sharing and service providers

We share information only with the service providers that make the app function — principally Google (Firebase and Google Places) for authentication, data storage, analytics, and restaurant data. These providers process data on our behalf under their own terms. We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the Service.

5. Data retention and deletion

Match data is retained while a match is active and for a limited period afterward, then expires. You can request deletion of your data at any time. In keeping with our privacy-first design, the app supports anonymising your data so it can no longer be associated with you. To make a deletion request, contact us at the address below.

6. Children

You Pick is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

7. Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, or to object to certain processing. You can exercise these by contacting us. You can also control location access in your device settings and opt out of website launch emails at any time.

8. International users

The Service relies on infrastructure that may process and store data in countries other than your own. Where required, we take steps to ensure your information receives an appropriate level of protection.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be communicated through the app or website.
